Frequently Asked Questions

So what exactly is a fat 1/4, fat 1/8th, fat 1/16th?
From a 1 metre length (39 1/2") x 112cm (44") width of patchwork fabric, it can be cut into several sizes.
  • One quarter (1/4). One metre of fabric cut horizontally and vertically in half both ways giving four (4) cuts of fabric 19 3/4" x 22" i.e. 1 fat 1/4.
  • One eighth (1/8) is cut from one (1) fat 1/4 piece of fabric horizontally measuring 9 3/4" x 22" i.e. 1 fat 1/8.
  • One sixteenth (1/16) is cut from one (1) fat 1/8 piece of fabric vertically measuring 9 3/4" x 11" i.e 1 fat 1/16.

Why is patchwork fabric called fat 1/4's, fat 1/8's and fat 1/16's ?
Rather than cutting small widths of fabric in long lengths of 112cm (44") long. Fabric is cut into various size amounts which generally gives you a larger fabric surface area to cut from.
