Colonies Reserve by Nancy Gere.
Imports supplied most of America's textile needs both for utilitarian and decorative purposes until about 1750 when the movement toward self-sufficiency in fabric production became serious.
Common colonial textiles could have been imported or made in America after about 1640. Still by the early to mid 1800's the number of different textiles available in America was large. Some of the more elaborately printed designs came from England and France where cotton printing was by this time reaching its peak. More simply printed American cottons were being produced in the emerging industrial centers in New England.
As any student of quilting history knows, some "scrap" of almost all of these 19th century fashions have eventually found their way into our most wonderful and treasured quilts.
Colonies Reserve pays tribute to this unique period of printed fabric production, and the classic designs of the Windham Fabrics Colonies series.

Delaines c. 1849 by Margo Krager
This very fine French woolen dress fabric, know as muslin of wool, was first produced in the Mulhouse region of France in the 1830s. These elegant dress goods were called Delaines in both England and America.
In 1836, Jose Hofer of Mulhouse began weaving a combination fabric with a cotton warp and very fine wool for the weft. Advances in the steam style of printing which included the development of a single print paste containing the dye and the mordant plus the rapid ageing of the fabric in a steam chamber allowed for complex designs (some overprinted with wood blocks) and colors on the fabric.
Intense Prussian blue and deep greens were especially popular colorations. These fabrics were used for both clothing and decorating and are frequently found in Log Cabin/Pineapple quilts in America.
Weave history into your quilt project as Margo captures the essence of these rare European fabrics in the Delaines Collection.

Emigrant Trail by Nancy Gere 1840 - 1860 for Windham Fabrics -Beginning around 1841 and continuing until the mid-1860s, over 350,000 Americans moved to the western United States. To date, this marks the largest peacetime migration in history. Their goal was to reach the Oregon Territory, California or Utah. The reasons for leaving home varied, but most centered on making a better life for their families. In 1849, the discovery of gold drew even more emigrants to Colorado, Idaho, and Montana.
The westward journey to fulfill this "manifest destiny" took four to five months. Most families traveled by covered wagon across as many as five unique trails. The trip over the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges was both difficult and perilous.
We salute those brave emigrants who opened up America's west with the Enduring Emigrant Trail collection. These unique 19th century designs impart the history and lore of American's prairie west.

Folklore by Whistler Studios.
Folk culture is most oftern defined by the tradition and authentic spirit that make up the identity of a people. During the rise of the 19th century the Romantic ideal of nationalism lead to a newfound admiration for traditional values for the purpose of modern goals.
The long history of Folklore and its association with mythology give it a vibrant and whimsical quality. The bold colors and patterns of The Folklore Collection and the quilts that they create are as varied and full of life as the stories that they tell.

More Pink & Chocolate c. 1860-1885
by Nancy Gere™
We just couldn't believe how many fantastic designs were left out of the first Pink and Chocolate Collection. With that we bring you More Pink & Chocolate.
The origin of chocolate brown used as a predominant color in printed fabric appeared with regularity in the nineteenth century. The color was worn by widows who had passed out of the stage of mourning, when they were expected to wear only black. The patterns used in these "mourning browns" were simple calicos, and not like the more stylized designs featured in this collection. Reproduction Fabrics fat 1/8's - fat 1/4's or $ per metre.

Pink Chocolate c. 1875 by Nancy Gere.
Pink Chocolate? What an odd, but delicious combination.
Later in the century brown as a color in printed fabric started moving to the forefront of European fashion. The idea is perhaps copied from hard to find Indian hand painted cottons. In the early to mid 1800's these Indian fabrics using rich colors painted on top of dark grounds were rarely seen in Europe. However, as a result of these beautiful imported fabrics, it is then that we began to see brown combined with the lively colors of red and pink emerging as a trend in Europe.
Our Pink Chocolate Collection commemorates several of these stunning European designs c. 1875. 34 fat 1/8's 10" x 21 1/2" 34 fat 1/4's 19 3/4" x 21 1/2" or $25.30 per metre.

Scarbrough Fair by Nancy Gere c.1885
for Windham.
By Nancy Gere
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
This stunning example of 19th century florals and blenders remind us of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Elegant line work and delicate variations in color are typical of these European period engravings and are a rare find in a single collection.
The original quilt from which The Scarborough Fair Collection began was found in Northwest England very near the seaside resort of Scarborough. Founded well over a thousand years ago as Skarthaborg by the Norman and Skartha as known by the Vikings, Scarborough became a very important port and venue for tradesmen from all over England. Reproduction Fabrics, 30 fat 1/8's 10" x 21 1/2" 30 fat 1/4's 19 3/4" x 21 1/2" or $25.30 per metre.

Vanity Fair, c. 1865-1890 by Nancy Gere™
Vanity Fair, a place or scene of ostentation or idle amusement and frivolity. Additionally, a vain and frivolous way of life especially in large cities (after a fair held in the town of Vanity in “Pilgrim's Progress”). The name later became the title of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel published in 1848, satirizing society in early 19th century England. It is also reminiscent of these beautiful examples of mid to late 19th century European Textiles.
All of the designs from Vanity Fair were selected from just 2 quilts from the archives of Nancy Gere. They are comprised of colors that were becoming popular towards the end of the 1860’s namely dark plums, rich browns reddish pinks and the occasional clear blue. However it is rare to find these colors together in a single quilt from this era. Vanity Fair with its large important florals and bold border stripes inspire today’s quilters to recreate quilts from the glorious age of Elizabethan England. Reproduction Fabrics fat 1/8's - fat 1/4's or $ per metre.

William Penn's Vision circa 1820 presented by Windham Fabrics and the State Museum of Pennsylvania - A Mariner's Compass quilt in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation archives inspired most of the fabrics in this collection. Made in the mid-1800s by Clarissa Dodge Marschalk, probably in New York, the exquisite original was created with 16 blocks, each containing a 32-point compass within a quilted circle. The blocks are separated by bands of glazed chintz and the outer border is a wide glazed floral chintz. Clarissa's work is exceptionally fine and her color choices of blues, yellow, browns, and pinks provide a beautiful aesthetic.
Two additional fabrics are also included in this collection. A scenic toile dated 1810, and a small floral sprig used as a backing to a chintz panel-both from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's collections.
With beautiful designs, enticing colors, and timeless appeal, these fabrics will help quilters create their own piece of history.
